It’s not just a fun prop, it has the same heart and soul that went into creating the show.
If you are a fan of the show, I cannot recommend this book enough. Why is there a dimension where everything is M?! There’s excellent foreshadowing, touching family moments and things that are just weird. Each character’s voice is very clear, and even their ink colour and handwriting has been carefully crafted to suit their personalities. The story progresses through journal entries penned by several people.
Sometimes it’ll be a funny joke, sometimes it’ll be a spooky poem. There are plenty of pages and lines that fans will have to work to decode. This book is filled to the brim with beautiful illustrations, spooky creatures, funny stories, great pop culture references and of course mysteries to solve! Hirsch has left no shortage of the show’s signature cyphers out of the journal. That said it’s far more enjoyable after you have watched the entire show. While it is advisable to watch the show Gravity Falls before reading Journal 3, I feel it tells a complete enough story on its own that it can be read without prior knowledge of the series. From the first episode of Gravity Falls I knew Hirsch’s cartoon was genius, and his book is too! More than that it is a beautiful companion to the show, tying up storylines while adding new information and character development. This book is a work of art – even more true for the special edition which I lament not being able to get my hands on. Embrace the weirdness of Gravity Falls again with this beautiful journal.
